The Arthur Stern - Two Point, Artist Model - Mandolin by A. Lawrence Smart
Idaho, July 22, 2000

Idaho, Big Leaf maple back & sides, one piece back of special quilted maple, as well as local Idaho spruce top,  ebony pickguard,  fingerboard & peghead veneer.  Triple bound black/white/black on the sides & back as well as the fingerboard and sound holes.  Waverly tuners with mother-of-pearl pegs and pearl blocks on fingerboard.  X bracing.
"This mandolin makes me so happy I can barely contain myself.  Right out of the gate it has a wonderful voice with nowhere to go but better.  Loud with surprisingly good bottom end, I think it must be the x bracing, and the E string will cut through anything, but the A which I've found to be the most difficult string to be in balance, on dozens of instruments I've owned, is balanced, and is strong & sweet. This 2 point plays the jazz chords so well!" - Arthur Stern

"Well, Arthur was kind enough to stop by yesterday with his new Smart. I have to say that it sounds and plays better than it looks... Honest... The neck is effortless to play. Sound is very rich and even, on strings and moving across strings. The E string is very clear but not sharp, G string is good and strong and the A string doesn't sound odd as you come on and off it, as some mandos can. Beautiful sustain for an F hole instrument. Almost makes me revisit my opinion that oval holes rule. All in all, one of the nicest mandos I've played in a long while." - Paul Ebersman (July,30,00)

New - Sept.2002 - A.L. Smart, long neck, two point oval hole mandolin
